DURING THE
last year in the polytechnic in 1994-95 my graduating work was a primary school
THE TASK was to design a primary school facility in Pirtti area, south of Kuopio. A large site was reserved for the school and some auxiliary activities; library and local recreational spaces, and also a sports hall to accomodate local freetime sports activities. THE PLANNING policies for surrounding areas as well as the need to reserve space for a water drain and the need of isolation from traffic dictated largely the positioning of the two-storey main school building on the North-east corner of the site, next to Pirttilahdentie, the main route on the Pirtti area. The dining/sports building was located across the main yard, and stepped on the ground elevation to position the dining hall above the sports hall to act as a spectator lounge. Farther west, the library/recreation building is built around a common entrance hall and used by pupils in the school as well as by local inhabitants. In the area between the sports hall and football field there is also the caretaker's detached house. The facades of all the three main buildings are stuccoed in white to give a uniform appearance for these separated building units. THE YARD was divided into distinct areas for main yard, maintenance and parking, as well as for different playground and recreational requirements and areas to be left to original state. The work also included a planting plan for the surroundings of the buildings. U S A B L E B U I L D I N G A R E A S
